Many other pureblood relatives, too. It's probably for the best if you don't ask for the entire family tree or we'll be here all night.

GAME INVOLVEMENT

Current Job: When he's not busy being wealthy and amazing, Lucius serves as a governor for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and fills the Wiltshire seat on the Wizengamot. Privately, he also toys with the idea of taking over the family apothecary someday, but right now, his focus is on ensuring that his name is firmly and positively established so that Draco (would you like to see pictures? He has pictures.) will have a good future ahead of him.

Political Group: Death Eater, though good luck trying to prove it.

Political Knowledge: Being a Death Eater, Lucius naturally knows most of the other Death Eaters on some level. He's high-placed enough--money and title afford him enough influence that the Dark Lord promoted him rather quickly--to know who he's working with on almost every level. He has his suspicions about the Order of the Phoenix, but he's not quite trusted enough to hold this knowledge yet.

Skills: Lucius has always been clever and adept at learning spellwork, and this applies to his understanding of the Dark Arts as well. His desire to prove himself to the Dark Lord as someone useful beyond simply having a silver tongue has inspired him to work as hard as a Ravenclaw studying for NEWTS to try and master said Dark Arts, and as a result, he's become fairly gifted in that area. He is an expert duelist--after all, what proper gentleman isn't?--but his real loves are potions and history. He will go on for hours talking about either, and his talent for potions was enough to get him recognized by Horace Slughorn and earn him a place in the Slug Club (his father's name didn't hurt matters at all).

More publicly, people probably know Lucius as the silver-tongued Slytherin who's always in with just the right people at just the right time, and indeed, he's very gifted in making connections and ingratiating himself to people. He learned from a young age that to succeed in life, you must wear many masks, and if nothing else, he is a master of knowing which mask to wear when.

Politics: Publicly, Lucius Malfoy supports the Walpurgis party and serves as one of the younger members of the Wizengamot on their side of things. All of his reasons for supporting this party are entirely true: he believes in preserving the traditions of wizarding culture and protecting them from being diluted by outside influence. He believes that Muggles are dangerous, and bases his arguments especially on Muggles' tendency to attack and disparage that which they don't understand as evil and something to be destroyed. Along these lines, however, he will always speak out against the actions of the Death Eaters and frequently say that they are an embarrassment to those who hold less radical but similar beliefs. Really, we're all trying to build a better world, and terrorism is certainly not the way to do that.

Privately, Lucius enjoys torturing Muggles for fun and sport. He hates Muggles...to him, they are a pest and a threat to everything he holds dear. Muggleborns are actually even worse, since they dare to come into wizarding society and bring their cultural dilution with them. If they absolutely must be born Muggles, why can't they simply stay within Muggle culture and accept their position as inferiors? Arguments about physical differences matter very little to Lucius; the true dilution taking place isn't a physical one, but rather a cultural one. Of course, he also believes that breeding with Muggles produces children of inferior magical ability, whereas marriages between purebloods and pureblood children will naturally be more magically gifted. He feels incredible pity for halfbloods--after all, it's not their fault that their parents decided to create an inferior child--but not enough to keep him from believing that even they have little place in magical society. As to blood traitors, Lucius honestly cannot fathom why somebody would turn his or her back on a glorious magical heritage. To him, it's like being presented with a perfect piece of cake and saying, "No thank you, I'd rather lick the bottom of this farmer's boot instead."

Past War Involvement: As far as anyone outside of the Death Eaters and Narcissa knows, Lucius has been amazingly lucky in avoiding being hurt in these tragic incidents with those terrorists.

In reality, he's actually all too happy to do the Dark Lord's bidding. His very first attack came in February of 1976. It was a rite of passage for Lucius, and he performed quite admirably, torturing and killing several Muggleborns with an almost professional air. Since then, most of his work has been in ensuring that the bills and laws the Dark Lord wishes to be passed actually do pass in the Wizengamot. Lucius has used the Imperius curse on many of his fellow representatives in order to pass more Walpurgis-friendly legislation. Lucius also fought in the Red Day of 2 March 1979 and in the attempted attack on Hogwarts the following year.

More personally, Lucius' darling sister-in-law (really. He loves her so much.) murdered her blood traitor uncle Alphard, which did not do very much for Lucius' beloved wife Narcissa, despite her uncle's... poor choices. Perhaps more disturbing was the disappearance of Regulus Black, Narcissa's cousin. Lucius shared his wife's concerns about Regulus being marked, but was careful not to speak about them; to this day, he wonders--if he had spoken up, would Regulus have run still? Or would he have stayed?

War Effort: Lucius very publicly donates to the Purple Hats through his wife, Narcissa.

DETAILS

20 Word Sentence Describing Your Character: Despite being arguably evil—at least towards Muggles—Lucius Malfoy’s harsh exterior conceals a geeky, family-oriented, and gooey caramel center.
Personal History:
Lucius Malfoy is the only son of Abraxas Malfoy and his wife Vivienne, just as Abraxas had been the only son of his parents and so on. The theory among the Malfoys is that putting the beautiful Malfoy women through pregnancy and childbirth too many times (i.e., more than is necessary to have a son) is simply cruel. What's more, fewer children allows for more focus on the sons and heirs, and that was the life Lucius grew up with: one of utter privilege. For much of his childhood, punctuated with visits to and from other pureblood families and tutors who ensured that the Malfoy heir received the very best education that money could buy, Lucius' greatest influence was his mother. Vivienne Malfoy taught her son everything he needed to know about the workings of the world, pureblood society, and the history of their culture. She taught him how to treat women and be respected by men, and she gave him everything his heart desired, molding her son into a perfect--if horribly spoiled--gentleman.

Lucius, of course, flourished under his mother's attention, and to this day, he only considers the Dark Lord and his wife Narcissa to have more of his admiration. His father, Abraxas, enjoyed a more distant relationship with Lucius, making his expectations and the consequences for failing to live up to those expectations quite clear. It was at least partly due to Abraxas' influence that Lucius became a strict and quick study, but with certain subjects, he found that something was odd about him. It wasn't until he entered Hogwarts (naturally Sorted into Slytherin before the hat even really had a chance to contemplate it) that Lucius realized that he was different from other young men his age. Oh, certainly, he enjoyed Quidditch and other masculine pursuits, but something set him apart from the other young men. Something that, when he realized it, became his secret shame.

Lucius Malfoy was a huge nerd.

Not just bookish and clever, oh no. Lucius didn't just enjoy reading books sometimes and get the answers correct on all his exams. No, he was actually excited (giggling, hand clapping, the works) to learn new theories in Potions or discover a new bit of history. Now, no one could ever know this horrible truth about Lucius--after all, he didn't want to be compared to real nerds like those blood traitor Weasleys--so this discovery marked the first time Lucius donned a mask. He publicly regarded his academic pursuits with a cool indifference and suppressed the giggles and the geekiness that came with learning new things.

Outside of classes, Lucius excelled socially. He was made a prefect in his fifth year and remained as such throughout his time at Hogwarts. He became a chaser for the Slytherin Quidditch team, and his academic prowess (and family name) earned him a coveted place in the Slug Club. He was relatively well-liked by his peers and honestly did his best to make nice with even those people (i.e., halfbloods and mudbloods) he couldn't stand. It was all just another mask.

Two interesting things began to develop during Lucius' time in Hogwarts. The first was arguably more globally important than the second, but both affected Lucius deeply.

In 1970--Lucius' fifth year, and his first year as prefect--the Death Eaters first became a Thing, and over that summer, Abraxas Malfoy mentioned to his son that his recruitment in this "Gentlemen's Club, devoted to maintaining the purity of our culture in the face of nearly insurmountable odds" (hey, Lucius got the silver tongue from somewhere) was not optional. Strings were pulled left and right, and Lucius was recruited to the Death Eaters and marked late in 1975. Though Lucius initially participated frequently in acts of terrorism, the Dark Lord believed that the Malfoy name carried more weight in the Ministry and used Lucius and his father for careful political manipulation. That's not to say that Lucius hasn't seen his fair share of battles and excitement, but rather that his work for the Dark Lord's Cause has been a bit more quietly behind-the-scenes. In this arena, Lucius has seen enough success to have worked his way into being one of the Dark Lord's most trusted followers, and in that, he takes true pride. Still, this is another mask he wears--as with his time at Hogwarts, his time with the Death Eaters demands a certain decorum. The same is true of his work at the Ministry.

The second interesting thing to develop during Lucius' time at Hogwarts came in the form of Narcissa Black. Of course, Lucius knew of the Black sisters--who didn't? There was Bellatrix, who had issues (really. He loves her. So much.). There was Andromeda, who also had issues, though of a different kind (privately, Lucius suspects the poor woman was brain damaged at some point. Who leaves the House of Black for a Mudblood?). And then, there was Narcissa--beautiful, blonde, determined Narcissa. In truth, Lucius probably would've glanced over her entirely, save for that his mother was constantly sending him owls, asking if he was seeing anyone and if he'd considered maybe that sweet girl, Narcissa? Even though the owls began in Lucius' fifth year, he decided that he was far too busy with O.W.L.s to worry about dating that year (and he did receive excellent marks; was there ever any question?). Sixth year, however, he and Narcissa began a relationship, to the surprise of exactly no one.

Lucius figured that a marriage from their relationship was pretty likely, but the thought made him honestly nervous. Not nervous, of course, that he wouldn't be able to provide for Narcissa and their future heir, nor that she would reject him. No, Lucius' nervousness stemmed from his deep, dark, geeky secret. What if Narcissa found out that he wasn't actually a dashing, fascinating, Quidditch-playing prefect in the Slug Club, but was (at his core) an enormous nerd who giggled when he found out that he was (very distantly) related to one of the very first Quidditch players?

As it turned out, Lucius' fears were entirely unfounded. Once he got up the nerve to show off his inner nerd to Narcissa, he found that she didn't think any less of him for it, and that was when Lucius Malfoy fell in love with Narcissa Black. He proposed to her before the start of her seventh year, and the two were married in 1975. All throughout their courtship, Lucius gave Narcissa everything her heart desired--any clothing, jewelry, trips, or anything else she wanted, she received. For more special occasions, Lucius went out of his way to treat Narcissa to truly thoughtful gifts and outings. She may possibly be the most spoiled wife in all of Great Britain, and only recently has Lucius' attention been diverted to someone else.

That someone? His and Narcissa's (perfect, handsome, strong, clever, amazing) son, Draco. The subject of Draco is the only one over which Lucius' inner dork will come out in public, usually accompanied by a small album of pictures. To say that Draco is his pride and joy is an enormous understatement, but what's more, Draco is his inspiration to ensure that the Dark Lord's goals are accomplished so that his son can grow up in a perfect world.
